Today, it was brought to our attention that a mistake was made in charging a juvenile as an adult in the vandalism case involving Reno High School. The relevant offense occurred at approximately 2327 hours on May 22, 2025. The individual turned 18 on May 23, 2025, and, although an adult now, should have been treated as a juvenile at the time criminal proceedings began. While the error was unintentional, we take responsibility.
Whenever it is discovered during a prosecution that a defendant was actually a juvenile at the time of the offense, Nevada law specifically provides that the case must be transferred to the Juvenile Court. We are taking immediate steps to correct the record and transfer the matter accordingly.
Safeguarding the legal rights of all individuals, especially minors, is a responsibility we hold with the utmost seriousness.
