Washoe County District Attorney's Office

Habitual Criminal Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison

Arrested in Connection to a California Shooting

Jun 20, 2024

The Honorable Judge Kathleen Drakulich has adjudicated Corey Cutler (dob 1/30/94) as a habitual criminal and sentenced him to more than 12 years in prison, with parole eligibility in 5 years. Cutler was convicted back in April of Being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Prior to this case, the defendant had six felony convictions, including convictions for Robbery, Assault Likely to Cause Great Bodily Harm, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.

Cutler was arrested in July of last year by detectives with the Repeat Offender Program (ROP), when his car was spotted in Washoe County. The defendant was a suspect in a shooting in California and was wanted by the California Probation Department. Officers with both ROP and the Regional Crime Suppression Unit (CSU) blocked the car, however Cutler initially refused to get out. When Cutler did exit, he was wearing a bulletproof vest and had a loaded handgun magazine in his pocket. The handgun was found in the car where he had been sitting.

During sentencing, the District Attorney’s Office argued for habitual adjudication, saying Cuter is precisely the person the habitual-criminal status is intended for. When he is in the community, he’s violent and usually found with a weapon. The DA’s Office also highlighted how Cutler’s extensive criminal history shows his contempt for the law and the community, and he has been undeterred by probation, parole, jail, or even prison, so a lengthy prison sentence was warranted.

The Repeat Offender Program is made up of Detectives from Reno Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, and Sparks Police Department. ROP works closely with the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office for successful prosecutions.
