A drug trafficker has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with parole eligibility after eight years. Isaac Alvarez-Rojas was arrested after detectives with the Regional Narcotics Unit conducted a narcotics and trafficking investigation last December. He was pulled over during a routine traffic stop and a K9 alerted to drugs following a free air sniff. A search of the car done by both Reno Police and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office found cocaine. An additional search of Alvarez-Rojas’ apartment uncovered more than 2,142 grams of methamphetamine equaling 10,713 doses, 22 grams of heroin equaling 220 doses, several cell phones, a BB-gun styled like a handgun and more than $2,550. Alvarez-Rojas was charged with, and pled guilty to, Trafficking in a Controlled Substance.

Deputy District Attorney Michael Vieta-Kabell prosecuted the case and recommended the 20-year prison sentence at the sentencing hearing. DDA Vieta-Kabell pointed out to the Court that the police found metal trays with methamphetamine residue, numerous cell phones, and numerous money wire receipts to Mexico in the defendant’s apartment, which demonstrated that he was deeply involved in the illegal drug trafficking trade. DDA Vieta-Kabell also emphasized that despite the dangerousness of fentanyl, methamphetamine was still the drug associated with the most fatal overdoses in Washoe County. The Honorable Kathleen Drakulich imposed the sentence.
