A man who was caught dealing drugs locally and arrested with 5 pounds of methamphetamine and 12 ounces of heroin, was given life in prison with parole eligibility after 18 years. That number of drugs is equal to and more than 11,000 doses of methamphetamine and 3,000 doses of heroin. Kerry Williams (dob 11/21/87) was previously found guilty by a jury in this case.
The Regional Narcotics Units (RNU) was running an operation at a local casino in August of 2022 when security approached detectives with information about Williams. Security told RNU that Williams had been staying at the casino for more than a month, and that he may be involved in drug trafficking because they saw a heavy amount of foot traffic by several people going in and out of his hotel room. It appeared that the defendant had also been soliciting people on the property. The information from security was consistent with information RNU had previously developed – that Williams was actively selling methamphetamine in Washoe County.
That evening, RNU detectives intercepted Williams after he left his hotel room with multiple bags, got into a taxi, and left the casino. Based on reasonable suspicion that Williams was involved in narcotics dealing, a Washoe County Sheriff’s K9 deputy pulled the taxi over, and the K9 conducted a free-air sniff, alerting to narcotics. A search of Williams found almost 4 grams of methamphetamine on his person, as well as the more than 5 pounds of meth and almost 12 ounces of heroin in the bags.
Williams had been on parole for a prior drug trafficking conviction and was released in 2022 before committing this crime. Deputy District Attorney Michael Vieta-Kabell highlighted Williams’ prior drug convictions, as well as the danger to the citizens of Washoe County that drug dealing and trafficking presents, particularly for such a large amount of narcotics. The Honorable Lynne Jones presided and imposed the sentence.
