Christian Alexander Monroy has been sentenced to 8-21 years in prison, after being found guilty of 10 felonies. A jury had previously convicted Monroy of four counts of Grand Larceny of a Firearm, four counts of Own or Possess a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, one count of Grand Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, and one count of Burglary of a Motor Vehicle.
On December 11, 2024, Monroy and co-defendant Parker Burton arrived at a local casino in two separate cars. Both men got into Monroy’s car and drove to a nearby railyard, where Monroy stole a Dodge Ram that a railyard employee left running in front of his building. Monroy then took the stolen truck back to the casino. At that time, Monroy parked next to the car of three men who drove here from Idaho for an agricultural convention. The victims had firearms with them that they had left in the car after going shooting, believing they were not allowed to bring them into the casino. Monroy then broke into the victims’ vehicle and stole five rifles.
The Regional Crime Suppression Unit was able to find both men, with Monroy having a price sheet listing some of the stolen guns intending to sell them. Four out of the five firearms were initially found, and the fifth one was later recovered.
At sentencing, Deputy District Attorney Widad Diab Sairafe requested a sentence of 16-40 years in prison citing Monroy’s extensive criminal history, including four prior felony convictions for similar crimes in Washoe County and 21 misdemeanor convictions, as well as the danger posed to the community by his attempts to sell stolen firearms for money and drugs, further fueling firearm-related crime.
The Honorable Barry Breslow presided and imposed the 8-21 year sentence.
