DA Hicks Announces First Degree Murder Charge in attack at Sparks Marina

Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks is announcing that a charge of Murder with the Use of a Deadly Weapon Committed Against an Elderly Person has been filed against Michael Paulsen (dob 6/5/91).

“My office is committed to seeking justice for Mr. Hess and to holding the defendant fully accountable under the law,” said DA Hicks. “We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Hess’s family and loved ones during this difficult time, and we will continue to work closely with the Sparks Police Department to ensure this case is handled with the care and diligence it deserves.”

Paulsen attacked 65-year-old Michael Hess at the Veterans Memorial at the Sparks Marina on November 3rd. Surveillance video from the scene shows Paulsen attacking Mr. Hess by kicking him and by striking him in the head with a rock repeatedly. The victim was taken to the hospital before ultimately passing away.
