Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks is announcing that criminal charges have been formally filed in the case of a newborn child that was left in a dumpster in Sun Valley over the weekend. Taylour Dickinson (dob 7/30/96) is charged with Attempted Murder and Child Abuse, Neglect, or Endangerment. At her Bail Hearing this morning, our prosecutor argued for a $1 million, cash only bail. The court agreed.
“This is a heartbreaking case,” says DA Chris Hicks. “The abandonment of a defenseless newborn is not only a serious crime, but a profound tragedy. I would like to formally commend those Good Samaritans for their quick thinking and the compassion they showed that allowed for the child to be saved. My office stands united with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and our community, in our commitment to uncover the full truth of this case and ensure that justice is served. As always, we will do everything in our power to protect our most vulnerable and hold accountable those who violate that trust.”
During Dickinson’s bail hearing, a prior instance of Dickinson leaving a child in a dumpster was brought before the court. The incident occurred in 2023, with the defendant alleging that she had a miscarriage and had placed the baby near a dumpster at a different apartment complex. Due to the facts, circumstances, and evidence, no case was submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution by the investigating agency at that time, nor were charges filed.
As a reminder, Nevada’s Safe Haven Law allows a parent to safely and legally surrender a newborn, no questions asked, at any hospital, fire station, or law enforcement agency within 30 days of birth. These designated locations provide safe and confidential options for anyone who feels unable to care for their infant.
