Jan 9, 2026

Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks is announcing that a Sparks man has been indicted by the Washoe County Grand Jury on a charge of Open Murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend and the mother of his two young children.

Luis Ibarra (DOB 12/1/1980) was indicted yesterday following a daylong grand jury presentation by the District Attorney’s Office. Upon the indictment, a no bail hold was placed on Ibarra who will remain in custody as this case proceeds through the legal process.

Sparks Police were called to a residence on Boise Drive on the afternoon of October 23, 2023, to conduct a welfare check after the victim’s sister reported that the victim had missed a scheduled meeting and was not responding to phone calls. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of 40-year-old Yadira Cano inside the residence. Ms. Cano was found with multiple stab wounds.

“I commend the detectives and officers of the Sparks Police Department for their thorough, diligent, and professional investigation in this difficult case,” said Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks. “My office is committed to holding Mr. Ibarra fully accountable for this horrific murder.”
