On July 21, 2026, at approximately 9:20 a.m., Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a report of a domestic disturbance involving a male suspect armed with a firearm at a residence on Sprucewood Drive in Sun Valley.
Deputies responded to the area and made contact with the female reporting party several blocks from the residence, where they were advised she had heard a single gunshot from inside the home prior to calling dispatch.
Shortly thereafter, visible smoke was observed coming from the residence, and the male suspect barricaded himself inside.
Deputies established a perimeter around the residence while the suspect remained inside. A short time later, deputies on scene believed they heard an additional gunshot from within the residence. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office SWAT and Hostage Negotiation teams were dispatched to the scene and made multiple attempts to contact the suspect.
Additionally, medical personnel and crews from Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District staged in the immediate area.
While negotiators continued their attempts to communicate with the suspect, heavy smoke began coming from the structure. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District firefighters worked to extinguish the fire while SWAT members provided cover to ensure firefighters could safely access the residence.
Once the fire was extinguished and crews were able to safely enter the residence, one deceased adult male was located inside.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting its formal death investigation and will release the identity of the decedent following notification of next of kin.
