NNPH, Renown Health to Host Free Showing of Screenagers – Under the Influence

Jun 8, 2026

June 8, 2026. Reno/Sparks, Nev. – Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH), in partnership with Renown Health, is inviting parents, caregivers, educators, and community members to attend a free screening of Screenagers Under the Influence: Addressing Vaping, Drugs, and Alcohol in the Digital Age.

The documentary will be shown Friday, June 12, from noon to 2 p.m. at Renown Health’s Mack Auditorium, which is on the first floor of Renown Regional Medical Center (view map).

Following the screening, Dr. Jose Cucalon Calderon, Renown Health pediatrician and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at University of Nevada, Reno, School of Medicine, will lead a question-and-answer session, providing parents and caregivers an opportunity to discuss concerns and learn more about supporting youth in today’s media environment.

RSVP to Screenagers – Under the Influence

Screenagers explores how the digital age and social media have reshaped adolescence and influenced youth exposure to vaping, drugs, and alcohol. Through personal stories and current research, the film examines common challenges facing teens and families while offering practical strategies to support healthy decision-making and teen mental health.

“Parents are navigating a rapidly changing landscape when it comes to technology, social media, and substance use,” said Dr. Chad Kingsley, District Health Officer for Northern Nevada Public Health. “This film provides valuable insight into the challenges teens face and offers practical tools families can use to foster healthy conversations and make informed decisions.”

Unlike many documentaries that focus primarily on severe addiction, Screenagers Under the Influence addresses the more common situations families encounter. The film debunks myths about substance use, highlights ways schools and parents can create healthy home environments, and showcases how young people are helping themselves and their peers make positive choices.

The event is designed for parents and caregivers but is open to anyone interested in learning more about youth substance use prevention and teen mental health.
