The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is proud to announce the successful unification of Washoe County’s volunteer Search and Rescue teams into one coordinated organization, now operating as Washoe County Search and Rescue (WCSAR).
This milestone strengthens coordination, deployment efficiency, and operational readiness across Washoe County, bringing together decades of experience, dedication, and specialized skill sets under a single, unified structure.
For more than 60 years, Search and Rescue volunteers have served Northern Nevada with professionalism, courage, and a strong commitment to helping others. While the public has long recognized these efforts collectively as “Search and Rescue,” multiple specialized teams operated within the program, each with distinct roles and capabilities, including ground search, technical rescue, K9, air operations, and specialty vehicle units.
Through this unification, these disciplines are now fully integrated into one cohesive organization. WCSAR operates under a unified command structure with four primary divisions, including water, land, technical rescue, and motorized operations. This approach strengthens coordination, enhances training, and supports more efficient and effective response efforts during emergencies.
Additional benefits of the unification include standardized training and qualification requirements, improved communication and deployment efficiency, shared resources and equipment, and expanded opportunities for volunteer development and leadership. The transition to a unified identity also includes a standardized uniform, with members now easily recognized by their red uniform tops, providing clear identification for partner agencies and reducing confusion during multi-agency responses.
“By bringing these teams together under one structure, we are building a stronger, more efficient Search and Rescue organization that is better prepared to respond when our community needs us most,” said Sheriff Darin Balaam. “This is a proud moment for Washoe County and for every volunteer who helped make it possible and embraced this evolution. While the structure has evolved, the legacy of the volunteer teams that built Search and Rescue in Washoe County remains at the core of this new organization. Their history, dedication, and service continue to shape WCSAR as it moves forward with a unified mission.”
