WCSO Alternative Sentencing Unit Receives Grant to Enhance Monitoring Program

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Alternative Sentencing Unit (ASU) has been awarded a $31,500 grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety to support continued monitoring and compliance efforts for individuals under court-ordered supervision.

The Alternative Sentencing Unit serves as a key component of Washoe County’s efforts to monitor individuals facing DUI-related offenses through post-adjudication supervision. Through structured supervision and case management, ASU works closely with the courts to help ensure individuals comply with court orders while supporting long-term behavioral change.

Funding from this grant will help maintain alcohol monitoring and reporting kiosks currently located at the following locations:

Reno Justice Court
1 South Sierra Street, 1st Floor
Reno, Nevada 89501

Incline Village–Crystal Bay Justice Court
855 Alder Avenue
Incline Village, Nevada 89451

These kiosks provide individuals under supervision with a convenient and accessible option to complete required check-ins and alcohol testing, reducing the need for in-person visits with case managers. The kiosks also help increase efficiency for supervising staff while ensuring individuals remain accountable to the conditions set by the court.

In addition to maintaining the existing kiosks, this funding will support enhancements to case management systems that improve data collection and reporting capabilities. These improvements allow supervising staff to monitor compliance more efficiently and respond more quickly to potential violations.

The primary goal is to reduce repeat impaired driving offenses by increasing compliance with court-ordered conditions, including alcohol abstinence and reporting requirements. Expanding access to monitoring technology also helps address transportation challenges faced by individuals living in rural or outlying areas of Washoe County who may otherwise struggle to attend in-person check-ins.

Supervision and case management have proven to be critical elements in helping individuals successfully complete court requirements while reducing the likelihood of repeat offenses.

The Alternative Sentencing Unit, formerly known as the Department of Alternative Sentencing prior to its dissolution, now operates within the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. The unit is responsible for monitoring individuals placed under supervision through the judicial system and ensuring compliance with court-ordered requirements.

The grant program will run through September 2026.
