A judge has sentenced Edgar Hernandez-Jacinto to 40 years in prison for the murder of LaMar Jarriett. He will be eligible for parole after 16 years.

The Honorable Barry Breslow sentenced Hernandez to 10-25 years for Second-Degree Murder, and a consecutive 6-15 years for his use of a Deadly Weapon. The four drug-related charges were sentenced concurrently with the other counts.

Hernandez killed Jarriett in April of 2023 after shooting him in the back as he was running away. At sentencing, Jarriett’s two sisters and mother spoke, all asking for the maximum, with one sister saying how, “the impact of this didn’t end with his [Jarriett’s] life.” The family all touched on the loss they continue to experience to this day, and how LaMar deserves justice, with the defendant deserving the maximum.

The State had argued for 20-life in the case: 10-life for the murder charge, 8-20 for the deadly weapon enhancement, and a consecutive 2-5 for all the drug charges, given that the defendant showed no contrition and was undeterred in his criminality: two days after murdering Lamar Jarriet, he was apprehended trying to sell drugs while carrying a firearm.
