Jan 26, 2026

A man who beat his partner has been given the maximum sentence of 11 years, after he was convicted last . James Allen (dob 11/18/73) was sentenced to 2-5 years for Domestic Battery by Strangulation and 2-6 years for Assault Constituting Domestic Violence with the Use of a Deadly Weapon. He was also given 146 days in the county jail, but with full credit for time served for his Domestic Battery, First Offense misdemeanor.

Allen was arrested after the victim’s coworker contacted the Reno Police Department when she showed up to work with a black eye, swollen lips, and limited mobility. She shared that Allen had strangled her the night before until she blacked out, as well as held a gun to her head and dry-fired it, saying the next time it would be loaded.

Hannah Martinez was the Deputy District Attorney on the case, and at sentencing, argued for: 24-60 months on Count 1, Domestic Battery by Strangulation; 180 days in the Washoe County Jail on Count 2, Domestic Battery, First Offense misdemeanor; and 28-72 months on Count 3, Assault Constituting Domestic Violence with the Use of a Deadly Weapon. The State requested all counts run consecutively to one another.

The Honorable Egan Walker presided and imposed the sentence.
