The Washoe County District Attorney’s Office is excited to announce its newest staff member, Canine Companions® Facility Dog, Kace. Kace will assist Investigator Teri Salter during her work with victims of crime.
“Facility dogs like Kace provide tremendous support in emotionally difficult environments like ours,” said District Attorney Chris Hicks. “Their calming presence can make a meaningful difference – especially for children who have been victims of crime. In moments of fear or uncertainty, these young victims can lean on Kace for both physical comfort and emotional reassurance.”
While with the WCDA, Kace will not only provide comfort and support for victims of crime but will also be an integral part of our community outreach. She is trained in more than 40 cues and is continuing to be taught skills that will be specific to her work with the District Attorney’s Office. Kace can play games with children, provide comfort and deep pressure using their “lap” and “visit” cues, retrieve tissues, and so much more.
For nearly 50 years, Canine Companions® has been enhancing the lives of people across the county by training and placing more than 8,000 service dogs with program graduates, including more than 500 dogs with military veterans. The estimated cost of a highly trained Canine Companions® facility dog like Kace, and all follow-up support, is $50,000. However, each facility dog is provided at no cost to clients. Canine Companions® depends on the support of tens of thousands of donors and volunteers to match our office with a facility dog like Kace, entirely free of charge.
