Jury Convicts Man of Sexual Assault Against a Child

Sentencing Set for September

Aug 15, 2024

This month, a jury convicted Oscar Urbina-Acosta (DOB 12/9/99) of Sexual Assault Against a Child Under 14 Years and Lewdness with a Child Under the Age of 14.

In October 2020, officers with the Sparks Police Department responded to a report of sexual abuse of a minor. The victim, a 12-year-old girl known to the defendant, disclosed that Urbina had sexually abused her twice that night. The first instance of abuse was in the home where the victim and relatives lived with Urbina, and the second instance occurred after he took the child into an alley in the surrounding neighborhood.

Urbina claimed he was “checking” the victim to “protect” her, however during the trial Deputy District Attorney Kristina Rhoades argued and emphasized that he had no legal or legitimate cause to be touching the child, rather his claim that he was “checking” her was nothing more than a ruse to conceal his sexual intentions.

Sentencing is set before the Honorable Judge Lynne Jones for September 19, 2024. Urbina faces life in prison.
