The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office will join other Nevada law enforcement agencies in a statewide Joining Forces campaign from August 7th through August 31st, 2024. This initiative will focus on dedicating extra patrol resources to reduce vehicle-versus-pedestrian crashes and enhance awareness of pedestrian safety laws.
When navigating our roads and highways, both pedestrians and drivers must prioritize safety. Pedestrians should always use designated crosswalks and wear bright or reflective clothing to enhance visibility, especially in low-light conditions. As they cross, pedestrians should continuously scan for oncoming traffic and make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway to ensure they are seen.
For drivers, adhering to speed limits and staying vigilant at crosswalks are essential. Always check for pedestrians waiting to cross, yield the right of way, and establish eye contact to ensure mutual awareness and safety. By remaining alert and cautious, we can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and promote safer travel for everyone.
This campaign is made possible by a Joining Forces grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety-Office of Traffic Safety. Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program aimed at reducing injuries and crashes through statewide enforcement in the areas of DUI, speeding, distracted driving, seat belt use, and pedestrian safety.
